ice-castle
Ice Castle

Mont Blanc, seen from the Rutor Glacier side, is not only the highest mountain in Western Europe, but a stratified mass of rock and ice, compact and severe, rising like a fortress. The dark walls, etched by seracs and glacial flows, support a summit that seems built to intercept light, rather than to dominate it. Here Mont Blanc appears distant, inaccessible, almost suspended, as if belonging to another time.

At the beginning of July 2021, I set off on a new adventure in the Aosta Valley. The stated destination was the Rutor glacier, but what I was truly looking for was a sunrise portrait of Mont Blanc. I wanted to observe and photograph the first point in Western Europe touched by light, in the best possible conditions. The spot I had in mind, a few tens of minutes from Rifugio Deffeyes, would guarantee me an unobstructed view, with the imposing Mont Blanc acting as the natural pivot of the scene.

My adventure began in La Joux, where the sun abandoned me almost immediately. A fine but incessant rain accompanied me along the climb to Rifugio Deffeyes, a suspended place that directly overlooks the immensity of the Rutor glacier. Here Sergio, the manager, a man from my area, welcomed me and offered shelter, allowing me to dry my equipment and some clothes. It was a moment of pause, where I could connect and share stories.

When the rain finally stopped, I set off again with my tent and backpack to reach the spot where I would spend the night. I pitched my tent near the Tibetan bridge leading to Grand Assaly, seeking natural shelter from the wind. After a warm meal, I crawled into my sleeping bag with the sky still overcast, but with a silent confidence that was growing.

Upon waking, the sky was still grey, but different. The clouds were high and allowed a glimpse of most of the surrounding peaks, including Mont Blanc. I set up my tripod about thirty minutes before sunrise, looking for the composition and waiting. The sun struggled to break through the clouds, but when it finally hit the summit of Mont Blanc, concentrating the light only on it, everything aligned.

The first fragment of rock and ice in Western Europe lit up, isolated from the rest of the landscape, creating a dramatic and solemn contrast. "Ice Castle" was born exactly from that moment: when an iconic mountain returns to being matter, light, and silence.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0989/6889/5835/files/land_alps_19_d0a861f4-6880-4602-9c3d-05572f1be026.jpg?v=1771765956
