Behind the work

Flow /1, 2, and 3 originate in the space separating the Vatnajökull glacier from the ocean, a vast alluvial plain where glacial rivers multiply, intertwine, and continuously transform. In spring, this territory enters a phase of maximum activity: the progressive melting of internal snows is combined with water from the glaciers, increasing the flow, speed, and complexity of the streams. The landscape no longer organizes itself into a defined course, but into a mobile, temporary network that rewrites itself day after day.

The images were taken from a small Cessna aircraft, maintaining an altitude that compresses depth and transforms the surface into a graphic plane. At that speed, the landscape flows beneath the gaze with no possibility of return: each form appears for a few moments and disappears immediately afterward. The shot is never the result of planning, but of a quick intuition, an instinctive decision made while the subject is already in motion. What is recorded is always an unrepeatable encounter between trajectory, light, and form.

From this distance, the rivers lose their narrative function and become a sign. The cold tones, dominated by blues, grays, and milky whites, derive from the presence of very fine glacial sediments in suspension, which make the water opaque and diffuse. The high and uniform spring light does not create sharp contrasts but accompanies the forms, allowing textures to emerge without a dominant center.

In Flow /1, 2, and 3, movement is the only true subject. The channels separate and rejoin, wrap around islands of dark sediment, thin out until they disappear only to reappear a little further on. Each image isolates a different configuration of the same phenomenon, as if the landscape were continuously experimenting with new formal possibilities. There is no privileged direction: the gaze flows, deviates, returns, following trajectories that seem more drawn than carved.

These images do not describe a specific place, but a seasonal condition. A moment when water temporarily dominates the land, imposing a fluid and unstable grammar. The forms observed from above are not meant to last: they will change with the river levels, with the wind, with the subsequent cycle of freezing and thawing.
