Behind the work
The first images that introduced me to the language of abstraction were born in Calafuria. A familiar place, along the Livorno coast, where I took my first steps in landscape photography and where the sea always played a central role in shaping my perception, even before the images themselves.
We often experience places in a fragmented way, passing through them without truly dwelling. We are physically present, but our minds are elsewhere. Returning to Calafuria was a conscious act of slowing down: choosing to stop, observe, and grant time to what is usually ignored. I wasn't looking for landscapes, but surfaces. Not wide views, but details.
The rock and limestone, sculpted by the continuous action of the sea, reveal a natural palette of subtle nuances, stratifications, traces of erosion, and mineral deposits. As the light changes, sometimes glancing, sometimes diffused, sometimes harsher, these surfaces take on different characteristics, almost as if they were different places, while remaining the same. It is time, more than space, that transforms them.
These images are born from the act of returning. Returning repeatedly to the same spot, at different times, to let minimal variations guide the gaze. Here, abstraction is not a contrivance, but a natural consequence of prolonged observation. A way to rediscover a familiar place through what, until then, I had never truly seen.
