Astral Reshaping

Behind the work

Astral Reshaping was captured in the transition zone between the vast Vatnajökull glacier and the ocean, where glacial rivers branch out into a complex and unstable network before reaching the sea. It is a constantly changing territory, shaped by the interplay of water, sediment, and wind, where nothing seems to follow a definitive pattern.

The image originated during a flight in a small Cessna, with a local pilot, having set off with the intention of observing the glaciers and the river systems that drain their waters from above. At that speed, about 250 km per hour, each scene appeared and disappeared in a few moments. I was shooting at extremely fast shutter speeds, trying to adapt to what was happening beneath me without the possibility of going back or correcting. It was in this continuous flow that, suddenly, the pattern of the rivers was interrupted.

Instead of the branching pattern, an unexpected shape emerged. It seemed that the water had encountered a natural barrier, probably sand dunes shaped by the wind and glacial sediments. Instead of dispersing, the flow concentrated at a single point, creating a large pool of water suspended in the landscape. The sand, mixing with the surface layer of the water, generated chromatic variations and fluid structures: denser areas, irregular margins, soft transitions between dark and light, between opaque and reflective.

Viewed from above, this configuration loses any immediate geographical reference. The water is no longer a river, the sand is no longer land: they become matter in dialogue, as if they were temporarily redrawing their own balance. The resulting form appears almost cosmic, similar to a planetary surface or a celestial body in transformation, despite being the product of extremely terrestrial and concrete processes.

This image is the result of a chance encounter, of a moment captured without the possibility of replication. An image that exists only because that balance between water and sediment, at that precise moment, took on that form, a configuration that probably no longer exists and can never be observed in the same way. Here the landscape is not depicted for what it is, but for what, for a moment, it became.
