Behind the work
From Monte Corchia, one of the best-known peaks of the Apuan Alps, also due to its extraordinary speleological interest, the gaze opens onto an essential and powerful stone amphitheater: the Pania Group and Pizzo delle Saette. The shapes are sharp, sculpted, but immersed in a balance of light and space, where the mountain dominates not only with its height but with its presence.
Pania della Croce, the "queen" of the Apuan Alps with its 1858 meters, presents a clear and severe mass that immediately captures attention. Next to it, Pizzo delle Saette, slightly lower, draws a rougher and more dynamic line, almost a ridge shaped by the wind. Together they create a continuous dialogue between solidity and movement, between breadth and detail.
After the Covid period, in June 2020, this was my second excursion to the Apuan Alps. I consider them my home mountains, those that I ignored for a long time but quickly realized I truly loved. Here, I understood that you don't need to go far to feel small. From Corchia, the view stretches along the Apuan ridges to the sea, and that sudden sense of vastness gently and firmly brings you back to a more essential scale.
Gorge was born precisely from this vantage point. The open and green valley in the foreground becomes a natural threshold that guides the gaze towards the Pania Group and Pizzo delle Saette, using the slopes of Corchia as a silent frame. At sunset, the typical warm, oblique light of the Apuan Alps illuminates the walls and allows shadows to create depth. In this balance between light and space, between distance and proximity, I found something that is not just landscape, but belonging.
