Behind the work
The Sassè d’Entova rises above Valmalenco and the Scerscen glacier as a modest and silent presence. A mountain that does not seek to impress but commands respect with its compact mass, made of dark rock, wide slopes, and a subtle balance between harshness and tranquility. It is a peak that observes rather than being observed, a discreet guardian of a valley rich in history.
The first two days of the trip were a test of patience and adaptability. Sudden storms, torrential rain, and hail dismantled our initial objectives one after another, forcing us to rethink our route and bivouac wherever the terrain and chance allowed us. The mountain, once again, dictated the pace. On the third day, finally, we set off towards Punta Marinelli. A long hike, made physically demanding by the weight of our backpacks—over twenty kilograms on our shoulders—and accumulated fatigue that offered no quarter. But that summit was a fixed point: from there, a complete view of Valmalenco, the Fellaria glacier, and the imposing Bernina group unfolds.
Upon reaching the start of the glacier, at the base of Punta Marinelli, we set up camp for the night. With lighter backpacks, we set off again towards the summit. At 3182 meters, our efforts were rewarded; the landscape transformed into something rare and fragile. The clouds, still very present, this time did not obscure the light but filtered it, accompanying it slowly towards sunset. Every form, every crest, every expanse of ice seemed suspended, as if time had slowed its breath. In that moment, immersed in a soft and iridescent light, I felt a deep gratitude: for the effort, for the wait, for the chance to witness such an ephemeral fragment of the world.
