Behind the work
Ra Gusela rises in isolation above Passo Giau, like a monolith breaking the continuity of the plateau. Its vertical, compact, and clear walls bear the full character of the Dolomites: severe, stratified rock, capable of changing its appearance with a minimal variation in light. It is a mountain that does not need to be sought out: it imposes itself on the gaze with a distinct, almost archaic presence, especially when conditions reduce the landscape to its essence.
The photograph was born on a day of total waiting. At Passo Giau, the whiteout was complete: sky and earth merged into a single opaque space, no reference, no direction. With snowshoes on my feet, I stopped, choosing to wait, trusting the forecasts that announced a possible clearing. In those moments, time expands and the gaze stops searching for subjects, merely remaining present.
When the sky began to clear, the first form to emerge was Ra-Gusela itself. It appeared suddenly through the clouds, majestic and isolated, as if it had always been there waiting. The light, sharp and powerful, struck the wall decisively, separating it from the rest of the landscape still immersed in shadow and mist. Everything around remained suspended, indistinct; the mountain, however, was absolute.
