Behind the work
Roots was taken on the flood plain between Vatnajökull and the ocean in November, a time when glacial rivers are almost completely dry. The absence of water exposes the structure of the land, revealing a landscape that normally remains hidden beneath the seasonal flow.
Captured from above with a drone, the image shows a network of deep incisions cutting across the dark surface like a branching system. The dry channels mark the soil with continuity and precision, following trajectories that suggest pressure, direction, and accumulation, even in the absence of any visible movement.
Deprived of water, the land takes on an almost organic quality. The forms resemble roots, veins, internal structures more than recognizable geographical elements. Scale dissolves: what might be read as a microscopic detail is, in reality, an expansive portion of the landscape. The uniform November light reduces contrasts and compacts surfaces, allowing the incisions to emerge as continuous marks, without a dominant focal point.
Roots tells a condition. A moment of suspension in which the landscape reveals its skeleton, what remains when the process stops. Not the movement of water, but the shape it left behind.
