Behind the work

The image does not depict a mountain in the full sense of the word.
It is a rock pinnacle, a few meters above the Fellaria Glacier, a minor presence that would normally go unnoticed. Yet, precisely because of its essentiality, it becomes an ideal space for the projection of thought. Here the rock does not tell a story of ascent or conquest, but merely exists, suspended between what emerges and what remains hidden. It is a form of boundary: between matter and light, between what reveals itself and what remains in shadow.

The descent from Punta Marinelli brought us back to base camp, where we had decided to spend the night. The weather closed in again, the cold intensified, and it even snowed during the night. The following morning, the sun was slow to reach us, held back by the wall of mountains behind us. When it finally began to make its way, it did so not abruptly, but with hesitation, playing hide-and-seek among the clouds.

It was in that slow transition that the scene took shape. The still low rays passed through thin layers of clouds and selectively hit the rock, leaving everything else in a deep penumbra. The pinnacle emerged intermittently, then disappeared again, as if it were part of a silent dialogue with the light. There was no decisive moment, but a continuous tension, made of brief waits and partial revelations.

This image arises from this intermediate space. Not from the instant something happens, but from the instant it is about to happen. It is the image of a threshold: when light has not yet conquered shadow, and shadow has not yet yielded. A fragile balance that exists for only a few minutes and which, once passed, cannot be relived in the same way.
