Behind the work
Unicellular was photographed in the geothermal area near the Krafla volcanic system, in northern Iceland, not far from Hverir. It is a territory where subterranean activity surfaces through mineral deposits, silica-rich waters, and chemical compounds that stain the soil with unnatural colors. Here, the landscape does not organize itself into recognizable forms, but into spontaneous structures, born from the direct interaction between heat, water, and earth.
Observed from above, the scene loses all geographical reference. The central pool, with its green-turquoise tones, appears as a suspended vital nucleus, surrounded by irregular margins and surfaces that seem to react to its presence. The chromatic transitions are not decorative but the result of ongoing chemical processes: mineral precipitations, oxidations, sediments that accumulate and recede over time. The ground becomes a membrane.
The choice of an aerial viewpoint is fundamental. Only from this perspective does the form reveal itself in its essentiality, evoking the image of a primordial organism, of an isolated cell in a hostile environment. Not in the biological sense, but as a metaphor: a minimal unit of energy, a center from which everything seems to radiate or towards which everything converges.
Unicellular does not depict a place but a condition. A moment in which matter seems to organize itself spontaneously, taking on a form that recalls origin, birth, the very possibility of life. It is an image that thrives on ambiguity: what appears vital is actually the product of an extreme environment, where every state is provisional.
