Behind the work
Among the landscapes explored in Northern Europe, Skagsanden Beach represents a rare condition. Here, the sea doesn't just shape the coastline: it becomes a gesture, a process of temporary writing on the sand. The surfaces transform into ephemeral maps, traversed by delicate branching patterns, fluid curves, incomplete circles reminiscent of river systems, organic forms, living structures.
These designs arise from an extremely delicate balance. The very fine, compact sand, the minimal slope of the beach, and the rapid retreat of the tide allow the water to flow without immediately dissipating. For a few moments, the ocean carves the surface with surprising precision, before everything is erased again. Each form is unique, destined to exist only for a very brief time.
Under certain conditions, especially during intensely frosty days, the process slows down. The surface stiffens, the textures are retained longer, as if the landscape wanted to suspend its own dissolution. But it's a temporary illusion: even then, the tide always returns to reclaim what it created.
These images do not document a place, but a moment of unstable equilibrium. They do not celebrate permanence, but impermanence. What is observed is already on the verge of disappearing. Photography thus becomes the only space where these forms can survive, not as objects, but as traces of a passage.
In this series, the landscape is not offered as a backdrop, but as a process. A silent dialogue between water, sand, and time, where beauty is never possession, but apparition.
