Behind the work
From the summit of Monte Corchia, in winter, the gaze embraces one of the broadest and most complex panoramas of the Apuan Alps. To the lower left, the West peak of Corchia emerges, lower and more contained, a snow-covered shoulder that guides the eye towards the void. To the right rises Monte Altissimo, a mountain profoundly scarred by marble extraction. It is a peak wounded by man, but on the rare occasions when snow covers it, even if only for a short time, it regains a form of silence and peace.
Winter here does not erase, but softens, and restores a fragile balance to the landscape. Over time, I have come to know the weather in the Apuan Alps well. I have understood when it is worth ascending, when conditions can offer images that are not just beautiful, but necessary. That day in February was one of them. I put on my crampons and followed the old quarry road, now the most direct and fastest route to reach the summit of Corchia.
Arriving below the rock and ice ramp leading to the saddle between the main peak and the West peak, something began to change. The clouds started to thin out, then slowly lowered. Meter after meter, visibility increased, revealing what had been hidden just moments before.
Once at the summit, the scene opened up completely. The light reflected off the clouds that enveloped almost all of the Apuan Alps, still whitened by what, in all likelihood, would be the last snow of the season. A clear and moving sea, crossed by soft and deep reflections, surpassing all expectations.
