Behind the work
Fissures was photographed in the glacio-volcanic area of Kerlingarfjöll, in the heart of the central Icelandic highlands. This is a territory where geothermal heat rises through a mountainous massif sculpted by ice, water, and volcanic activity, creating unstable, fractured, and constantly evolving surfaces. Here, the landscape does not appear as a volume or panorama, but as a skin: a surface permeated by deep tensions.
The photographed detail shows a series of parallel fissures that incise the ground like traces of internal movement. The fractures are not random, but the result of thermal stresses, freeze-thaw cycles, and the slow deformation of the soil. The material opens up, retracts, and recomposes itself, revealing a chromatic stratification of ochre, browns, mineral whites, and silica residues. The uniform light allows these textures to emerge without hierarchy, making every surface variation legible.
Observed up close, the scene loses all sense of scale. The fissures can appear as microscopic incisions or as monumental cracks: the terrain becomes ambiguous, suspended between detail and landscape. It is precisely this ambivalence that defines the image. There is no dominant focal point, but a rhythmic repetition that suggests continuity, pressure, and resistance.
A landscape fragment that does not describe the place, but the process that traverses it.
