Behind the work
The Fjallsárlón glacier, in southeast Iceland, is one of the glacial tongues descending from the vast Vatnajökull ice cap. It is a large and compact body of ice, imposing in its mass, but above all in its shapes.
Under certain conditions, its morphology reveals a surprisingly recognizable form. The main ice cap, observed from this perspective, takes on a profile that evokes a heart, not as a romantic symbol, but as a vital center, the core of a silent force. The low clouds play a fundamental role: sliding over the upper surfaces, they visually separate the ice into three distinct volumes, almost as if they were three peaks emerging from the same origin. The diffused light sculpts these masses, accentuating their three-dimensionality and restoring depth to what, with clear skies, would appear as a single dominant form.
When the clouds part and the sky clears, everything changes. The glacier recomposes itself, losing its apparent divisions and returning to being a single continuous, compact presence, governed by the large ice cap that determines its character. It is the same place, the same matter, but narrated differently.
In Iceland, even the most monumental forms can be delicate, and what appears imposing can, for an instant, take on an intimate geometry.
