Behind the work

The Scottish Highlands are not home to imposing mountains in the classic sense of the term. There are no grand faces, no peaks that dominate the view from above. Here, the mountains resemble hills that persisted, that continued to grow without ever becoming truly vertical. Broad, rounded, ancient masses, which appear more eroded by time than built by force.

Shooting Slash meant immersing myself in this essentiality. The light never fully broke through, but rather moved slowly across the land, as if searching for an opening. When a luminous blade etched itself into the slope, I didn't feel like I was witnessing an illumination, but rather a temporary wound in the landscape. A sharp, brief mark, destined to close up again soon after.

It is this kind of relationship that deeply connects me to the North. Conditions are unstable, the sky remains low, the weather is never truly accommodating. Light does not console, but questions. In this, the Highlands remind me of the most authentic mountain: not the celebrated one, but the one that demands attention, silence, and a willingness to wait.

In Slash, there is no summit to recognize, no point to conquer. There is a moment of tension between light and shadow, between what emerges and what remains hidden. A landscape that does not offer itself, but allows itself to be traversed for an instant. And it is in this precariousness that I find the reason why I continue to seek places like this: because here, as in the mountains, beauty is never guaranteed. It must be earned.
