Behind the work
The Isle of Skye is a land of transition. Geologically ancient and shaped by a profound volcanic past, it presents a fragmented landscape of dark ridges, rolling plateaus, damp moors, and mountain ranges that emerge without ever fully imposing themselves. The sea is always near, the climate unstable, the light uncertain. Skye does not give itself easily.
In Scotland, truly epic light situations are rare, perhaps even more so than in high mountains. Rain is a constant, the sky often remains overcast, and when a gap opens, one must be ready to react without hesitation. During a particularly wet autumn, I walked in the rain along the path starting from Sligachan, intending to seek less conventional compositions and highlight the seasonal details of the landscape.
Composing in continuous rain is complex. The muddy terrain slows every movement, the lens constantly gets wet, and concentration is tested. Sometimes it's even more difficult than working with mountains hidden by clouds. Patience becomes an integral part of the process.
I already knew the place well and was looking for a foreground that could support the scene. At some point, the wind began to move differently and an uncertain gleam appeared near the mountains. In Scotland, this is a clear sign: light is about to arrive. The previous day, in a nearby valley, I had missed a similar opportunity. The sky had opened for a few moments, unleashing an intense light accompanied by a rainbow, but I wasn't ready, so I chose to observe and enjoy the moment, without the distraction of the lens.
Not this time. I positioned myself where shrubs, foliage, and a small bare tree formed a dense and irregular foreground, capable of holding the gaze. In the background, the mountains surrounding the Fairy Pools remained in shadow. A few minutes later, the rain stopped, the sky began to open, and the landscape lit up with a diffuse, powerful, unexpected light.
This image depicts a brief, fragile moment when the Scottish landscape stopped resisting and allowed itself to be traversed by light, exactly long enough to be seen.
