Behind the work
Vatnajökull is a presence that redefines the very concept of landscape.
With over eight thousand square kilometers, it is Europe's largest glacier, an immense body that stretches from the interior of Iceland to the sea. Beneath its surface, active volcanoes and geothermal systems coexist, making this glacier not a static element, but a continuous threshold between opposing forces. Here, ice is not mere accumulation: it is pressure, slow movement, geological memory.
In spring, when rising temperatures and snow begin to interact, the glacier's surface reveals an unexpected complexity. Volcanic ash and debris, deposited over time by underlying eruptions, emerge as dark veins, sculpted by wind and cycles of freezing and thawing. The ice opens into fluid textures, visual currents that seem to guide the eye towards distant lines, almost suggesting a direction. These are not decorative signs, but traces of internal tension, evidence of a force that continues to move even when everything appears still.
To observe and photograph these glaciers from this perspective, a conventional shot would not have been sufficient. The distances are too vast, the flows too extensive, the wind too variable for a drone to succeed in penetrating. It was necessary to move away from the ground, abandon any close-range control, and seek a broader view. So, I organized the overflight with a local pilot, studying routes, currents, and conditions, until I boarded a small Cessna. From there, the glacier revealed itself.
Observed from above, Vatnajökull loses all human reference.
Cracks become systems, surfaces transform into maps, and the boundary between ice, land, and sea dissolves. What appears chaotic from below, from this distance takes on a silent order. The dark lines do not interrupt the white; they traverse it, guiding the eye without imposing themselves, as if the glacier itself were showing its internal workings.
Arctic Guardians is born not as a celebration of grandeur, but as an act of respect towards a presence that does not ask to be interpreted, only recognized. These ice masses do not protect by will, but by existence. They guard a fragile balance, suspended between fire and water, between apparent immobility and continuous transformation. Flying over them was like observing something that precedes and transcends any human intention: a landscape that does not easily yield, but which, once seen, remains etched in the soul.
