Behind the work
The mountains in the Norwegian hinterland in late autumn are in a delicate transition phase. The first snows begin to settle on the highest peaks without yet defining them, while further down, water, dark rock, and a constantly subdued light dominate. I was shooting just before a lake, with the mountains in the background still without a true winter face, suspended between what was ending and what had not yet begun.
The conditions offered no room for optimism. Intense rain, a completely overcast sky, a flat light that seemed to deny any possibility. Sunset was only minutes away, but it appeared unreachable. The most rational choice was to give up, to accept that this moment would offer nothing. And so I started to head back, leaving the waiting behind.
It was then that something opened up. Not a clear change, but a hint: a shy ray of light, filtered through the mountains, lasting very little. There was no time to rethink the path or return to the spot I had studied earlier. I had to react, read what was in front of me, and accept it. The wet, dark rock, with its irregular grain, became the foreground. The light, reflected and unstable, etched the scene for only an instant.
At the Last Breath originates from this minimal space. Not from the image I had in mind, but from the one that became possible at the last breath. It is a photograph that speaks of attention rather than waiting, of presence rather than control. In these places, I have learned that opportunities don't come when you wish for them, and they don't last as long as you'd like. They exist for a few moments, and they ask for only one thing: to be ready.
